Topic 2: Governing the European Union

Lesson 3
Step #1: Gathering Information

Strategy: Advanced Organizers

  • How has immigration impacted Germany and Other European Union Member States?

Activities

Review the following handouts prior to using them with the class. Make copies of the handouts and put them in folders for the students. Tell them that this is their resource book for this series of lessons and that we will refer to them often.

Use a graphic organizer such as a chart, diagram, oral presentation, or concept map to preview the articles in the folder. Use the terms from the Word Wall in your discussion. Use terms and concepts from the previous lessons to link what students know to new ideas in the articles.

Have the students work in groups to preview the articles. Assign one article to each group. Have them identify two major ideas in the article and then:

Relate that idea to old knowledge about Germany and European Union
Have them compare and contrast this new information to what they already know about Germany and European Union
Have the groups present this “expanded knowledge” to the group and have them respond to questions from the class until there is clarification of the issues. Be sure presenting students and the rest of the class are using terms from the word wall in their discussion. Model this behavior by making an effort to use these words yourself in the discussion.

Have students modify their idea statements and put them in the form of generalizations. Put these on the board and have the students record them in their notebooks for use in thinking about these issues.
