Topic 2: Political Institutions in Germany

Step #2: Extending and Refining Information
Strategy: Discussion Cards and Graphic Organizer
Class discussions are important in engaging student involvement. Many formats are possible, but the overall goal is the engagement of all students. Providing roles during partner or group discussions is helpful for many students when analyzing text because it makes everyone accountable for a certain task.
Activities
Provide students with Handout #9 (Timeline of Modern German History), Transparency #14 (Division to Unification) and Transparency #15 (German Unity).
Form students into groups of three and assign the following roles for reviewing Handout #9 (Timeline of Modern German History): Main Idea Developer, Key Word Finder, and Question Developer. Students might use a graphic organizer such as the one below to clarify thinking:
|
What events led to the unification of Germany in 1990? |
Why was Germany unified after years divided? |
