Cultures around the world often use proverbs to teach and preserve values from one generation to another. The teacher should introduce the concept of “values” and give a few examples of proverbs well known to U.S. culture. For example, “a chip off the old block” teaches how parental modeling greatly influences the character and personality which develop in children. Ask students to complete Worksheet 10 “Proverbs” and be able to describe values shared by both cultures. As a concluding exercise, have students write a newspaper article summarizing their impressions of German culture.
