Lesson 2
Step #2: Extending and Refining Information

Strategy: Compare and Contrast

Activities

Arrange students in three work groups. Each group should use the folders and Regions of Germany Chart from Step #1 of this lesson.

Each group should examine the data from the folder and compare the three regions of Germany in each of the categories on the Regions of Germany Chart.

Each group will write a summary report of their findings and report to the class.

Each group will be assigned one of the three regions. Each group will use the data from the folders to examine the unique characteristics of their assigned region in three categories:

Physical features
Resources/industries
Industrial locations
Each group will then answer this question about their assigned region:
How do the unique characteristics of this region affect economic development and population distribution?
Each group will report their findings to the class. After a class discussion, each group will write a comparison of the three regions in the categories of resources, land use, industry, and population.

Students will use research collected in Step #2 to write a comparison of the three regions in the categories of resources, land use, industry, and population.
